Jawbone Up detailed: tracks activity, food intake and sleep cycles, available November 6 for $100

Back in July, Jawbone did something puzzling. The company, best known for its Bluetooth headsets, teased a photo of a colorful wristband called the Up — a deceptively simple thing that could purportedly track your eating, sleeping and exercise habits. The outfit left out a few teensy details: the price, shipping date and, the biggest riddle of all, how it works.

At last, the company’s ready to talk specifics. We just got word the Up will be available in the US November 6th for $100, and will continue its world tour on the 17th. With that price, it’s well-matched against the clip-on Fitbit Ultra tracker, and indeed, they have some key features in common — namely, a step counter and a few requisite social networking features. But with a sensor that knows when you’re in deep sleep and a mobile app that can identify photos of food, it has a few unexpected tricks that could give devices like Fitbit a run for their money.

Like Fitbit, Up sports a step tracker that keeps tabs on distance, pace, calories burned and active time versus sedentary periods. The band, available in seven colors, is also sweatproof and water-resistant, though the jury’s out on how comfy it’ll be during an hour-long run.

But its killer feature could well be a sensor that detects what stage of sleep you’re in, and uses a vibration motor to wake you up when you’re in a light sleep state. So, if you set your alarm for 7:30, it might rouse you slightly earlier if it knows your brain isn’t availing itself of some sweet REM. Like Fitbit, it also knows how many hours you slept and how long it took you to nod off. Once you’re ready to upload this treasure trove of data, just pull off the end of the wristband to reveal a 3.5mm plug. It charges via USB, and you should be able to squeeze out seven ten days of use on a charge, according to Jawbone.

Tying it all together is an iOS app that lets you snap photos of the food you’re about to eat and parse the calories based on the image. (What? Ignoring weird looks while you’re photographing your fries builds character.) Of course, it also has a requisite social networking component, in which you can challenge friends to contests — say, “Who can do the most walking today?” — and view stats on a leader board. (Fitbit’s web app offers a good deal of community features too, for what it’s worth.) The bad news: it’s only available on iOS, and no, you can’t access this data via a website. What’s more, it’s unclear when an Android version will follow, except that it’ll arrive eventually. Fitbit, while lacking in apps, at least has a mobile website that will load on any device.

Sato Takeru to make his stage debut with “Romeo and Juliet”

t’s been announced that actor Sato Takeru (22) will be making his stage debut with Shakespeare’s enduring masterpiece “Romeo and Juliet” which will start playing in May 2012.  Sato will play Romeo, and he commented, “I will challenge squarely toward the pure love story of ‘Romeo and Juliet’.”  It was also revealed that actress Ishihara Satomi (24) will be taking the role of Juliet, and this is the first time for them to co-star each other.

The stage direction will be taken by Jonathan Munby who is the notable young stage director in the London theater, and it will aim the “love story that strikes a sympathetic chord in the modern audience.”

Sato who is being active in several scenes, such as TV and movies, has set the preparatory period of 2 years for the stage debut.  He first visited the United Kingdom to see Jonathan in July 2010, and also he visited and stayed there for 2 weeks in this March to attend the workshop operated by Jonathan.  Then Sato went to the United Kingdom again in this May in order to take the training for stage performance.

Though Sato has been trying extremely hard to face with the important role of Romeo. He commented, “It was such a valuable experience (this preparatory period), but still, I am completely amateur for the stage play, so I’m being desperate how I can catch up to everybody.  I’m not sure how far I can go, but I will try my best with my full strength.

Ishihara who will play Juliet who falls in love with Romeo who is from an opposing family, commented, “It’s a title that everybody knows, and Juliet has been played by many many people.  I felt little embarrassed and uneasy to play the fiery love story that wrenches your heart with the numerous famous lines.”  However, after having a deep discussion about the role and the intent with Jonathan, Ishihara commented, “My anxiety completely disappeared, and it made me think that I wanted to stand on the stage as Juliet.”  She says that she can’t wait for the rehearsal now.

Sato commented about Ishihara, “I always thought she is the actress who shows an attractive acting, so I’m really happy to be able to work with her.”  On the other hand, Ishihara said about Sato’s impression, “He looks at people squarely and is manly, but he is also a modesty person at the same time.

Other than Sato and Ishihara, other main cast members have also revealed.  Kaku Kento as Tubalt, Suda Masaki as Mercutio, Onoue Hiroyuki as Benvolio, Hasegawa Hatsunori as the Capulet, Ishino Mako as Capulet’s wife, Hashimoto Satoshi as Friar Laurence, and so on.

The stage play will start at Akasaka ACT Theater, Tokyo from May 2nd to the 27th, and at Theater BRAVA!, Osaka during May 31st to June 10th.

Samsung breakthrough could turn your window pane into a big ol’ LED

Samsung’s quest for transparency won’t end with laptops, apparently. Today, the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology announced that its engineers have successfully created “single crystalline Gallium Nitride on amorphous glass substrates” — an achievement that would allow the manufacturer to produce jumbo-sized LEDs from normal glass, including window panes. Samsung says this scaled-up approach will allow them to lower production costs relative to most LED manufacturers, which rely on sapphire, rather than glass substrates. And, whereas most Gallium Nitride (GaN) LEDs on the market measure just two inches in size, Sammy’s technique could result in displays about 400 times larger. “In ten years, window panes will double as lighting and display screens, giving personality to buildings,” a Samsung spokesperson told the Korea Herald. Unfortunately, however, it will likely be another ten years before the technology is ready to hit the market. Until then, we’ll just have to do our late night window coding the old fashioned way.
